Susskind steps down

The government’s chief adviser on public sector information has decided to move on.

Richard Susskind, chair of the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information, says: “I have decided to step down as chair of APPSI. My last meeting will be in mid-April, which will have been five years; two more than was intended. It has been a fascinating and productive period but I think it is time for me to move on.”

    …and the significance is?

Ooh, you’re a hard man, Mr Arthur. [Previous comment wasn't me! - Charles Arthur.]
OK, my immediate reaction is that it’s a loss. Susskind’s intellect, grasp of the issue and political nous are badly needed if this debate is to progress.

That said, it’s obviously a disappointment that APPSI has not been more radical in its approach. Perhaps this was inevitable given the irreconciliable interests of its members. Perhaps now would be a good time for the government to reconsider what it wants from the body. Come up with a firmer PSI policy, in fact.

Well someone’s doing an excellent impression of you!

The implied question about APPSI’s significance is a good one, I think. I’d be interested to hear what people have to say.
